The United States’ Centres for Disease Control (CDC) has revealed that 21 cruise ships with a US port of call suffered at least one incidence of Coronavirus onboard in the four weeks prior to the global shutdown of the cruise industry.
The report by the CDC shows that 21 cruise ships from nine cruise lines, many of them homeporting in the US, but some of them also only calling in the US, were affected by the virus.
The list includes direct and indirect infections with passengers who also showed symptoms after disembarking their cruise.
The list doesn’t include cruise ships that suffered outbreaks in international or foreign waters, such as Diamond Princess in Japan and Holland America’s Zaandam off South America (which was recently allowed to disembark guests in Florida).
Coral Princess was also sailing a South American voyage at the time of her outbreak and was allowed to dock in Miami last week. She was also not included on the list.
Princess Cruises has been particularly hard-hit by the outbreak, with four of its ships being hit by outbreaks in the early stages of the virus’ spread globally, it began with Diamond Princess, then Grand Princess and Crown Princess in the US, and finally Coral Princess off South America.
The list of US-cruising ships hit by Coronavirus outbreaks was released part of new health guidance from the CDC specifically for cruise lines.
It includes new rules for cruise lines getting passengers and crew safely back to their home countries and essentially requires that cruise lines charter in-bound and out-bound flights and busses.
There are separate requirements for those that are well and those who are ill and needing further medical care. All the details can be found on the CDC web site.
Here is the list which also includes the different itineraries impacted:
