Princess Cruises has announced that its proprietary wearable passenger technology Ocean Medallion will next be introduced aboard Regal Princess, ahead of her 2019 Caribbean season and a year before her 2020 Dubai to Singapore cruise.

The 3,560 guest Regal Princess will be the second ship in the fleet to utilize the technology after it was introduced aboard Caribbean Princess last year.

All Regal Princess’ guests will have full access from February 17, 2019, during the ship’s current Caribbean season. She will be the first Royal-class cruise ship to feature the technology, marking a major step forward for the platform as its introduced aboard the largest class of cruise ship in the fleet.

Regal Princess is a Royal-class cruise ship, the largest in the Princess fleet, and will cruise from Dubai in 2020.

The Ocean Medallion is fully-automated and has no visible technology such as an on-off switch or charging function and gives passengers a streamlined ship embarkation and disembarkation process, as well as quicker and easier entry and exit at ports of call.

Staterooms can also be accessed without the use of a key card, and all on-board cruise purchases, such as drinks and specialty dining, which are usually charged to the cruise card, are now charged via the medallion.

Crew can also see guest’s individual food and beverage preferences via the medallion and accordingly offer a more personalised service, while the OceanCompass, which provides interactive directions throughout the ship and allows guests to easily locate friends, family and children, is accessible via the platform as well.

These portals throughout the ship can also be used to access real-time information about the itinerary, as well as events and activities taking place during the cruise.

Interactive games can also be played on portals across the vessel, including trivia challenges and a ship-wide digital scavenger hunt, as well as a selection of casino games including poker, bingo and roulette.

“We’ve received excellent feedback from guests and crew members who have experienced the Medallion on Caribbean Princess as we continue on our path to fleet-wide activation,” said Tony Roberts, Vice President, Princess Cruises UK and Europe.

The wearable technology is designed to make the cruise experience more customised and convenient for passengers.

“The more personalised service we are now able to provide is benefiting guests from the moment they step foot onboard,” he added. “The Medallion enhances so much of what we offer, from speedy embarkation, to staying in touch with friends and family, to finding your way across the ship, to ordering drinks.”

The Medallion was first unveiled by Carnival Corporation CEO Arnold Donald in 2017 (Princess Cruises is one of 11 cruise lines owned by Carnival Corporation). It will continue to roll out as part of a phased fleet-wide activation plan with further announcements to be made in due course.
